'Unknown Caller' por Suderland Guimarães

Nosso grande amigo nos presenteia com a interpretação de mais uma bela canção do U2, confira...


Olá caros fãs do U2,

Vamos a mais uma interpretação, dessa vez a de "Unknown Caller", que, em minha opinião, está entre as melhores do álbum “No Line On The Horizon”, ao lado de “Magnificent”, “Moment Of Surrender”, “Crazy Tonight” e “Breathe”.

Primeiro vou colocar as declarações que o Bono deu sobre “Unknown Caller” para a revista Rolling Stone, a edição brasileira de nº. 30, para fundamentar a interpretação:

“‘Unknown Caller’ faz referência a Jeremias 33:3 – ‘Invoca-Me e te responderei ’”. Segundo o Bono, “Há esse tema recorrente de rendição e devoção e todas essas coisas que acho realmente difíceis”. Mais adiante a reportagem diz: “‘Unkonwn Caller’ – que fala sobre ouvir a voz de Deus – também parece ser uma história contada da perspectiva de um viciado”.

Segundo esse ponto de vista do Bono, essa canção pode ser lida como um tipo de oração, na era do celular, de um personagem que está sofrendo por causa do seu vício. Uma oração onde esse personagem, que está agonizando, invoca Deus na tentativa de alcançar redenção divina. O curioso é que “Unknown Caller” começa com a frase ambígua “Sunshine”, que poderia ser uma homofonia para “Son shine” (filho da luz), o que faria muito sentido no contexto de redenção da música.

In a place of no consequence or company [Em um lugar sem consequência ou companhia]
3:33 when the numbers fell off the clock face [3:33 quando os números despencam da face do relógio]
Speed dialing with no signal at all [Discando rápido, sem nenhum sinal.]

Nessa primeira estrofe o personagem fictício criado pelo Bono, descreve que estava numa situação muito complicada, sem companhia e perdido. O Bono estabeleceu na música o intervalo da agonia desse personagem, “perdido entre a meia-noite e o amanhecer”. Então, às 3:33h, quando as horas de agonia avançam e o desespero parece tomar conta, ele fez uma “chamada” misteriosa que terminou salvando-o, pois a música começa falando do “brilho do sol”, o que indica que ele contemplou a beleza do amanhecer.

Como vimos na declaração do Bono no início, o número 3:33 na verdade é uma referência ao livro de Jeremias (Jr. 33:3), onde Deus diz: “Clama a Mim, e responder-te-ei, e anunciar-te-ei coisas grandes e ocultas, que não sabes”. Assim, seguindo a dica do Bono, concluo que esse personagem, num momento de desespero e dor, clamou por Deus (que é o “interlocutor desconhecido”) e Ele respondeu. Mas, pela frase "sem nenhum sinal”, parece que a chamada não foi respondida de imediato. É que Deus age somente na hora que tem de agir, que não necessariamente corresponde à hora que achamos que é a certa.

Escape yourself, and gravity [Escape de você mesmo e da gravidade]

Então entra esse “coral”, que creio que representa a voz de Deus, para quem o personagem em agonia clamou. Talvez a escolha de várias vozes tenha sido com a intenção de representar a grandeza e a força da voz de Deus. Força que se sente no tom impositivo e a ciência que ela tem da condição do personagem, mesmo não estando com ele, e do que ele precisava ouvir para superar a sua situação desoladora.

Então o interlocutor, no caso Deus, manda o personagem externar o que está sentindo (shout it out) e não desistir da sua luta, não desistir de enfrentar essa situação que lhe afligi. E prossegue dizendo que ele deve escapar dele mesmo, escapar dessa dor, ou compulsão, que o corrói e o domina.

Outra forma de interpretar a frase “Escape yourself” é entendendo que, muitas vezes, nosso maior inimigo somos nós mesmos. Em momentos difíceis muitos gostam de posar de vítima, de coitado, e ficam esperando uma figura materna que os acalentem e afague o ego. Outros esperam que Deus faça tudo, como um pai que superprotege seus filhos. Assim, assumimos uma postura passiva e imatura diante dos problemas, de tal forma, que se torna quase impossível contorná-los. Mas na canção Deus intervém firmemente ordenando que ele escape dele mesmo, de seu querer, de seus desejos e até da gravidade, ou seja, escape dessa consciência adoecida e lute por sua sobrevivência, mesmo que ela pareça tão difícil quanto escapar da gravidade.

Shush now [Psssiu… agora]
Oh, Oh
Force quit and move to trash [Encerre e mova para a lixeira]

A ordem de Deus para o personagem parar de falar e ouví-Lo também tem a ver com a reação psicológica do personagem. É que em situações de alto estresse é normal entrar em desespero, falar mais do que escutar e reduzir a capacidade de raciocínio. Assim, passa-se a agir movido pela emoção, que geralmente conduz a situações ainda piores.

Quantos de nós não fizemos algo na hora do estresse da qual nos arrependemos amargamente depois?! Por isso Deus manda o personagem se calar e escutar. Então ordena que ele encerre essa neura e pegue todos esses pensamentos doentios e jogue-os na lixeira, limpando a sua mente para que ele possa recomeçar e vencer.

On the edge of the known universe where I wanted to be [No limiar do universo conhecido onde eu queria estar]
I had driven to the scene of the accident [Eu dirigi para a cena do acidente]
And I sat there waiting for me [E sentei lá esperando por mim mesmo]

Lendo esses versos me parece que o personagem, mediante a situação desoladora em que ele se encontrava, fechou os olhos e tentou fugir dos seus problemas, fazendo uma viagem para bem longe do caos que o cercava e lhe causava dor. Viagem que pode ter sido fruto de uma dose da droga. A fuga do que achamos que não podemos superar é uma reação natural da alma humana, por isso o personagem disse que queria estar no limiar do universo, o lugar mais longe que ele pode conceber.

Mas como ninguém pode negar a realidade para sempre, mais cedo ou mais tarde tem-se que voltar para ela, o personagem abriu os olhos e voltou para a cena do acidente, onde ficou esperando se reencontrar com ele mesmo, na busca de uma luz para sua alma aflita.

Restart and re-boot yourself [Recomece e reinicie-se]
You're free to go [Você está livre para seguir]
Oh, oh

Então o interlocutor ordena que o personagem recomece e “reinicie-se”. Essas palavras lembram um conhecido conceito de “nascer novamente”, descrito por Jesus no Evangelho. (João 3:3). Jesus afirmou que todos os homens precisam “nascer novamente” se quiserem ver e ter acesso ao Reino de Deus e, assim, encontrar a Paz verdadeira. Então o que significa “nascer novamente”?!

O sentido da palavra “nascer” utilizado por Jesus não diz de uma possível recuperação moral e comportamental do homem, ou de uma associação numa religião. Quando Jesus disse que é preciso nascer de novo, ele falou de uma nova consciência que sabe do quanto precisa do Espírito de Deus iluminando-a. De um ser que abandonou sua justiça própria para confiar somente na justiça oferecida por Jesus e, assim, viver justificado, em paz e guiado pelo amor de Deus. Sem “neuras” ou culpas, apenas sabendo que, mesmo que falhe, em Cristo, não há condenação.

Logo, quem “nasce novamente” inicia um processo de libertação das doenças do ego (alma), dos vícios físicos ou psicológicos, dos grilhões das religiões, das expectativas alheias, etc. Por isso a letra diz que o personagem está livre para ir. Agora é ele quem decide o que deve fazer, ou não, através de uma consciência irrigada pelo amor de Deus. “E conhecereis a verdade e a verdade vos libertará.” (Jo.8.32) “Para a liberdade foi que Cristo nos libertou.” (Gl.5.1)

Dessarte, após todos as ordens citadas, Deus deixa o aviso para se gritar para a felicidade, que é esse novo nascimento, se houver chance. O “nome” e a “senha” - a aceitação da mensagem - permitem que uma nova comunicação se concretize, um novo relacionamento se estabeleça. Um relacionamento íntimo de amor, paz e liberdade com Deus-Pai, que são frutos dessa nova consciência, que, por sua vez, é consequência do “novo nascimento”! Para começar esse relacionamento basta se entregar ao amor de Deus, sem burocracias ou complicações.

O interessante é que já no começo da carreira o Bono defendia esse conceito de liberdade ensinado por Jesus, que não é sinônimo de libertinagem. Isso está numa entrevista que ele deu ao Neil McCormick ainda na época do álbum Boy, onde ele disse que “... muitas pessoas pensam que render-se a Deus significa abrir mão de todas as coisas boas. Eu costumava acreditar nisso, de certa forma.” Disse Bono. “Mas quando você se envolve, começa a ver as coisas muito claras. Você começa a ver o que está acontecendo ao seu redor. Quando um cara se aproxima de você com uma garrafa, você percebe o que está acontecendo, você percebe que ele está sendo enganado. É um discernimento. Isso certamente não é puritano ou covarde. Isso não é sobre abdicar responsabilidades. Isso é sobre tomar a vida em suas próprias mãos”. (Livro “Killing Bono”, capítulo 8, pg. 125).
