Well done, Bono!

Finally U2 are presenting their new record – and it’s full of
lovesongs. It’s hard to believe that the masters of global seriousness
and limitless pathos are suddenly giving vent to their emotions.
Musically “Achtung Baby” is a return to top form, they are ignoring the
huge problems of the world and are leaping right to the emotional life
– straight to the heart, where feelings are ragging, sometimes sweet as
sugar, sometimes endlessly painfull.

Right at the outset of the first song “Zoo Station” Bono wants to let
go all worldly goods, hand over control and get drifted away by the
music and his emotions: “I’m ready to let go of the steering wheel”,
he sings defiantly. Hand in hand with such understatement the music of
U2 returns to it’s best days, when the sound was huge but not suitable
for cathedrals. Still Edge’s wide spanning, sometimes screaming,
sometimes pleading guitar is a great foundation for Bono’s smoky,
tormented, whispering vocals. But now there’s room for new, modest
tones. U2 are quiting the laming grandiosity: “Achtung Baby” is deep,
moving and fresh.

Often the music of Bono & Co. does not sound like fullfiled lust
and love, but unsecure and gloomy. To what extend this bitterness is
autobiographical, as you may think of Edge’s devorce, is not clear. But
one thing is for sure: Rarely has heartbreak been procured as
bittersweet as on this record, for example in “One”, when a sad and
repentant Romeo thematizises the turmouils of an unsteady relationship.
Or when Bono slips into the role of a betrayed lover in “So Cruel”.
With “Who’s gonna ride your wild horses” Bono returns to the positive
side of life and sings, freed and wild and backed by the breathtaking
guitar, his optimistic hymn – one of the highlights of the record.
Further highlights are “The Fly”, the hard, weird and powerfull single,
and “Mysterious ways”, a glam-rock-infected homage to David Bowie’s
“Low”-era.

Just the humor comes off badly. But U2 never were much good at humor.
And when Bono has the presumption to sing a silly phrase like “A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle”
in “Tryin’ to throw your arms around the world”, he unnessesarily
lessens the level of this brilliant song. Anyhow the long waiting has
paid off. With an artistic diet and a simultaneous refreshment U2 have
pealed of the stain of exaggerated pathos like a second skin. With this
massive comeback the biggest rockband in the world could be on it’s way
to become the best.
